How to write an essay

Hiya !

f:id:ai-en-fr:20200722214713j:plain

How to write an essay in English !?

Introduction

  • ●  Briefly introduce the topic- define any term or concepts that need defining (slave breeding, intersectionality, totalitarianism - anything that isn't either commonly used or understood to have one clear meaning). A vignette, or short quote from a primary source, can be a very effective of leading into an introduction.

  • ●  List what your middle / topic paragraphs will cover- in the order you will cover them. If you are choosing to focus on particular elements whilst leaving out others, make this clear in the introduction and briefly explain why (so that it doesn't look like you've just forgotten to write about certain issues).

  • ●  State your conclusion- there shouldn't be some kind of surprise reveal at the end of your essay. Make it clear what your argument is, so that the reader can follow it through the essay, Make sure that your conclusion actually answers the question, rather than a very similar question that you've constructed in your imagination.

Middle / topic paragraphs

Body

  • ●  Topic sentence- briefly outline, preferably in one sentence, what this paragraph will be about. Link it to the question here - make it very clear how this point links to your overall argument.

  • ●  Body of the paragraph- this is where the evidence for your argument will lie. Put here any historiography and primary evidence that supports your case. Make sure that it fits into the theme that you've chosen for this paragraph. Be selective - sometimes you'll find find great evidence that won't really fit into the rest of your argument. Avoid the temptation to throw in a "floating paragraph" - a few sentences that aren't linked to anything else - and just leave this evidence to one side.

  • ●  Mini conclusion- the final sentence of each of these paragraphs should conclude the point, and link it back to the question. If appropriate, you could also signal what your next point is going to be, and highlight any clear links bewtween point and the next.

Conclusion

  • ●  Sum up the points in your argument- don't be too wordy, but do remind the reader of the key points you have made. It's good to throw in a statistic or quote that you haven't used before - but not something that is vital to your argument (that should be in the main body of the essay). This is a good place to outline if there are any factors you think are particularly important, or any that have been overstated by historians.

  • ●  Link your argument to existing debates- if your answer aligns with a particular historian or group of historians, say so. If your argument is completely different, make that clear too.

  • ●  Answer the question- make it absolutely clear to the reader what your argument is, and, most importantly, link it to the question.
